Hemelsbreed is een geschilderde lijn door Amsterdam.

Op de plattegrond van Amsterdam heb ik een rechte lijn getrokken van mijn atelier naar de woning van mijn vrouw. Overal waar deze lijn een straat, plein, plas of gracht kruiste, ben ik gaan zitten en heb ik geschilderd, steeds kijkend in de richting van de woning. Voor alle duidelijkheid: de punten zijn dus geen echte, maar virtuele kruisingen. Ze zijn ook niet door mij gekozen om hun pittoreke kwaliteiten. Ik schilderde ze eenvoudigweg omdat ze werden gedicteerd door de lijn.
  
De afstand van atelier naar woning is hemelsbreed vijfeneenhalve kilometer en heeft vijfenvijftig van zulke virtuele kruisingen. Het eerste punt is mijn atelier in het buitengebied van stadsdeel Nieuw West (HB00), het laatste punt de woning in de Plantagebuurt in het centrum (HB56). Zij maken geen deel uit van de lijn en hebben dan ook geen geschilderde afbeelding.
De lijn als geheel geeft een beeld van Amsterdam. Door de concentrische structuur van Amsterdam daal je als het ware in de tijd af: van het platteland en de nieuwste woonwijken naar steeds oudere delen tot je eindigt in de zestiende eeuw.

Alle schilderijen zijn gouaches op papier van 27 x 40 cm. Op de kaart kan bij elk punt het schilderij worden opgeroepen door op ‘afbeelding’te klikken in de ballon. Bij het schilderij kan vervolgens een tekst worden opgeroepen d.m.v. de informatieknop in de bovenbalk. De teksten zijn gebaseerd op dagboekfragmenten die ontmoetingen met toeschouwers en passanten beschrijven.

As the crow flies is a painted line through Amsterdam.
On the map of Amsterdam I drew a straight line from my studio to my wife’s appartment. Everywhere where this line crossed a street, square, pond or canal I sat down and painted, always looking in the direction of the appartment. To make myself clear: the points are not real, but virtual crossings. They are not chosen by me for their picturesque qualities. I painted them simply because they  were prescribed by the line.

The distance from studio to appartment is five and a half kilometre as the crow flies and has fifty five such virtual crossings. The first point is my studio in the green outskirts of stadsdeel New West (HB00), the last the appartment in the Plantage-quarter in the centre. They are not part of the line and therefore have not a painted picture.

The line as a whole gives an image of Amsterdam. Because Amsterdam has a concentric structure one descends so to speak into time: from the rural outskirts and the most recent quarters to the older parts of the twentieth and nineteenth century till one reaches the canal zone of the eightteenth through sixteenth century.

All paintings are tempera on paper, 27 by 40 cm. On the map a picture can be made visible by clicking ‘picture’ in the balloon connected to each point. Every picture has a text (click the information button in the upper bar), in Dutch only, that describes a meeting with or comments of lookers-on and passers-by.
